It’s about 45 minutes from the city on the Metro-North. What did you have for breakfast this morning?I have basically the same thing every day because I’m such a creature of habit: a soft-boiled egg, sauteed spinach and mushrooms, avocado, a piece of toast with blueberry jam and Earl Grey tea with almond milk. I get up at 6 a.m. like clockwork. I feel best when I go to bed around 9 and wake up at 6--it’s just how my internal clock is set. I actually have a three-hour morning routine, which people make fun of me for, because I might not technically start “working” until around 9. But those three hours are really productive and precious to me. They prime me for the rest of the day. What made you want to become a filmmaker?I think as a sort of sensitive &amp; lonely kid, movies felt like companions in this way. I was always affected by them to an alarming degree and wanted to understand how you could create that feeling for someone else. Also, I thought the only way I’d be able to meet my childhood crush, Robert Pattinson, was if I became a successful actor or director. What are three movies you loved growing up?The Parent Trap, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Titanic. I remember Titanic affecting me so much as a kid that I like slept on the floor of my parent’s room the night we watched it almost as if I had seen a horror movie and couldn’t be alone out of fear. I’ve always been really drawn to tragic romance and gothic romance—classic Romeo and Juliet territory. What movie have you been into recently?I’ve been re-visiting Haneke movies lately and also movies about high schoolers because my second feature, which I’m writing now, takes place at a boarding school. So I’ve been watching like Mean Girls and The Piano teacher–basically movies that are centered around bitchy teenagers and movies that are centered around desire. What do you do when you’re not working?Even the things I do for fun are usually tied to my work. I love going to see a movie at Lincoln Center with a friend, and even shopping can turn into research for me—I’m thinking about what a certain character might wear. I think the one time my brain really switches off is going out for a nice dinner maybe. What do you do when you’re feeling down?I do what probably the majority of people do when they feel down, which is, go for a walk or FaceTime one of my best friends. Ideally the walk is somewhere near the water, along a pier or somewhere with trees. Driving and listening to music also works, although I wish I had a car in the city. I am 25 weeks, which I guess is 6 months. I found out I was pregnant the day after we opened the fall season in October. It was such a roller coaster because I was already so stressed about the season, and then I was so excited about my pregnancy, but also super anxious about it going well.I continued to dance until I was 3 months. I performed Nutcracker when I was 12 weeks pregnant, which was incredibly difficult, just dealing with feeling weird, the hormones. I didn’t have a ton of nausea, thankfully. I was dancing with one of my favorite partners, James. He’s one of my best friends, and I felt so safe doing a little pas de trois with him, and my parents came to see the show.Now I’m not rehearsing or performing anymore, but I’m still dancing 3 days a week, just taking class, and it feels great. I feel better when I move. What did you eat for breakfast?
 I will definitely eat leftovers for breakfast. I had Han Dynasty Chinese food — dumplings with chili oil, black bean chicken, and bok choy over rice — then I fried an egg and put it on top.I wake up at 7 and get back in bed with my coffee and my cat. Snuggling with my cat in the morning is non-negotiable. I need at least 30 minutes to drink coffee and pet my cat. What do you do when you’re feeling blue?
 My inclination is to be alone and wallow and spiral and scroll anything to make myself feel worse.But what I’ve learned to do is always call a friend. It makes me feel so much better. Any problem can be solved by feeling love and support from your friends. What book are you reading right now?
 I run ballerina book club. I’m reading a book called The Doorman. It’s a thriller and very New York. It’s set in a building called the Bohemia, but it’s clearly the Dakota. What was your pre-show ritual?
 I always like to eat pasta 4 hours before the show. Then I’ll take a 30-minute nap if I can. Sometimes it’s like a torture nap — you’re trying to sleep but your heart’s racing.Then I’ll wake up, drink coffee, get my hair and makeup done. I love to have 30 minutes on stage alone before the audience gets there, listen to music, think through how I want to portray the character, and feel the vibes of the opera house. I know you love to hike. &nbsp;Where should we go? Some of my favorite hiking is where I’m from in Idaho, in Stanley. The landscapes in the West are unparalleled. What are you doing for your baby moon?
 I’ve always wanted to do national parks with my husband. We’re going to Arches, Canyonlands, Monument Valley, and Sedona, then ending in Tucson for my dad’s 70th birthday. I’m so excited. Those landscapes in the West are unmatched. What podcasts are you listening to?
 I love a history podcast called Noble Blood. She picks a historical figure with a dramatic life and tells their story. &nbsp;I usually listen at night or when I’m doing chores or playing with my cat. How many times do you practice before one performance? How do you remember all the choreography? A million. It’s total muscle memory. You just know it.Sometimes I won’t remember the steps, then I’ll hear the music and my body can do it without thinking. We had a little list going, but nothing felt like it was really going to be for her. One night, my husband and I went out to dinner and he had this tote bag with all these musician’s names on it. One of them was Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the Godmother of Rock and roll. We both saw it at the same time and without saying a word to each other, we knew it was the one.For Alton, I think it was right around my due date. We were slightly panicked because our boy name list was crazy. Fun names, maybe just too funny. Once again, we went out to dinner, Miss Lily’s this time, and right behind Kyle was an Alton Ellis record hanging on the wall. He’s known as the Godfather of Rocksteady. Alton&nbsp;also means “Old town by the river”, which resonated with us being in New York, but also Troy where Kyle is from, and Montreal where I’m from. It felt like all the stars aligned. What does the perfect Saturday look like? From start to bed time! Waking up to Rosetta and Alton singing in their bedroom. It’s the sweetest thing ever. Little breakfast at home and then going for a walk and getting coffee. Putting Rosetta’s hair in pig tails and taking her to Film Forum or Metrograph to see a movie! They have adorable kids programming — real pictures! Cinderella (the original Technicolor), Fantasia! Rosetta loves going to the cinema. We both get a popcorn and a sparkling water. Then we go back home and nap together while Kyle and Alton go on a bike ride around Central Park. In the evening, I love going out to eat and getting ice cream. Then we come home, put on our jammies, brush our teeth, listen to some of Kyle’s records and dance until everyone is sleepy. I found the most beautiful light grey silk Miu Miu dress there recently. I also love Spiral Books on Sullivan. They do really cute crafts with the kids there! And of course, Makié. I can't watch any more Paul Mescal things because I get into a deep depression.&nbsp; Tell me how obsessed you are about Hamnet (without spoilers because I will go see it!)Of all the films I’ve seen with Paul Mescal, this one is by far the one that broke me the most. I’m not sure everyone is built to watch this film because it is so devastating. I’ve never cried so much in a theatre. I cried for hours after the movie. I cried yesterday telling friend about it. It’s probably one of the most beautiful films ever made. Most truthful, most painful. I couldn’t recommend it more, but if you’ve lost a child, a sibling, or if you are a mother, brace yourself.
